What causes Ticks in Dogs? 

It is seen that dogs pick up ticks from the outer environment or their fellow dogs. Ticks get attracted by various factors like warmth, contact, and odor and with time, they start to grow at a high rate. Ticks are most likely to get active during warm weather, like spring or summer, and reside in our fur baby’s body till it is detected. Some diseases caused by ticks transmission are tularemia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, equine encephalitis, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis.

Symptoms of Ticks in Dogs

Ticks cause a lot of discomfort to our Dogs because they extract the blood from their bodies, causing irritation, and lead to various problems for your pet. It is quite tough to detect these bloodsucker parasites as they are small and sometimes not visible that easily. But some of the most common symptoms to detect ticks are:

  • Itching
  • Fever
  • Small bumps
  • Unexplained scabs
  • Redness and inflamed skin
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite

How to remove ticks from your Dog’s fur?

Dog ticks are usually attracted from the outside environment so whenever you take your Dog out, check for any bump on your Dog’s coat. Ticks are typically found around the head, neck, ear, and feet. The ticks are small bumps stuck in the Dog’s body, which can be felt by touching it. You can check your dog’s coat every walk in order to keep them away from ticks. If you ever find any tick on your dog’s body, do not squeeze it as the blood gets stuck at that part, which can further cause infection. The best method of removing the tick is by twisting them with the help of a tweezer. It is one of the best methods to remove ticks, and you should also consult the vet for further precautions.

Home Remedies for Ticks in Dogs

Some of the preventive measures that one can follow to protect their Pooches from these parasites are:

  • Mint leaves

Mint is not only famous for its refreshing smell but is also a great natural defense against ticks. You can prepare a mint spray with lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and warm water and soak 10 – 15 mint leaves in this mixture and let it rest overnight. The following day, strain this whole mixture and spray it on your dog’s infected area. Perform this trick for at least 2 months to eliminate ticks.

  • Neem leaves/oil

As we all know, neem contains the most beneficial anti-bacterial properties, which can be highly helpful in fighting against ticks. You can gently pour a few drops of neem oil on your palm and massage the affected area. However, some dogs have sensitive skin so in that case, you can mix a few drops of almond or jojoba oil and let it sit for some hours before bathing them.

  • Tobacco

Tobacco is an eternal herb consisting of Nicotine, which also acts as an excellent insecticide. You can rub tobacco leaves on infected areas. You can even boil tobacco leaves in water, and after straining them, you can apply the liquid to the required area. The tobacco extract can do wonders, and within a short time, all the ticks will be removed from your fur baby.

  • Bay leaves

Bay leaves are a famous spice, but you might be amazed by their great benefits. It is an excellent repellent for ticks control. You can use crushed or ground bay leaves on your pet’s skin 2 – 4 times a week, and then you will see the magic. Moreover, you can even tie some bay leaves on their beds so that there will be no chances left for any ticks invasion .

  • Cloves

Clove is another effective and natural product that can keep ticks away from your dogs. The Cloves have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help in preventing ticks. However, to prepare clove spray, you have to take three dried cloves along with three camphor crystals,  dissolve them into 1 liter of alcohol, and let them rest till they mix well. Transfer this mixture to the spray bottle and spray it all over the dog’s body. You can use this remedy once a week for better results.

  • Lemon

The citrus properties present in lemon prevent ticks naturally. You have to take 2 cups of lemon juice along with 8 cups of water and ¼ cup of shampoo and leave it overnight. In the morning, spray your dog with this solution and let it sit for 1 hour before cleaning it. You can use this disinfectant spray on the infected areas for a quick cure.
